DIY Beard Oil Guide for Beginners
How to Craft Beard Oil at Home
There’s something powerful about creating something with your own hands - especially when it’s going to live in your beard.
Making your own beard oil can be a solid way to explore what works for your skin and style. Whether you're the type who likes to mix things up or just looking to test a few scent ideas, we’ve laid out a clean and simple path to help you get started.
Why Even Make Your Own Beard Oil?
If you're here, you already know beard oil isn’t optional - it’s the foundation of beard care. It helps soften coarse hairs, hydrates the skin underneath, keeps the itch away, and gives your beard a clean, healthy shine.
Some guys love the DIY route. Maybe it’s the challenge, maybe it’s the scientific fun of learning. Either way, when you know what you’re doing, making your own oil can be rewarding.
What You’ll Need to Get Started
Before you hit the kitchen like a mad scientist, stock up on quality gear. If you're gonna do it, do it right.
Carrier Oils: The Backbone of Your Blend
Carrier oils are the base - they deliver nutrients to your skin and beard and help dilute essential oils. We always suggest Organic if at all possible. One of the most important things with crafting your DIY beard oil carrier blend is to know what works best for your skin and beard. We suggest testing each individual carrier oil on your skin and beard independently to find out what you like the best. Once you narrow down the carrier oils you like the most, that's your blend. Then, just ratio them out how you see fit. There is a lot more science that can go into this part, but for sake of DIY fun, we'll just keep it this simple.
Some go-to options:
-
Jojoba Oil – Closely mimics your skin’s natural oil (sebum)
-
Argan Oil – Adds softness and shine
-
Sweet Almond Oil – Lightweight and smooth
-
Coconut Oil – Fast-absorbing with a dry finish
-
Hemp Seed Oil – Full of omega fatty acids
Bearded Coast Tip: Blending 2–3 carrier oils gives you a better feel and performance.
Essential Oils: Where Scent Meets Identity
This is where your beard starts to tell its own story. Essential oils deliver aroma and, in some cases, added skin benefits.
Popular essential oils to start with:
-
Cedarwood
-
Fir or Pine
-
Patchouli
-
Bergamot (FCF)
-
Black Pepper
-
Tea Tree
-
Rosemary
Bearded Coast Tip: These oils are strong. A little goes a long way. Star with the "less is more" approach. More on that in the safety notes below.
Tools of the Trade
-
1 oz amber glass bottles (protects oils from light)
-
Funnels & droppers for clean pours
-
Measuring cylinder or pipette for accuracy
-
Tongs (for sterilizing bottles)
-
Labels (you'll thank yourself later)
Step-by-Step: DIY Beard Oil Process
1. Sterilize Your Bottles
Toss them in boiling water for a few minutes. Careful! The bottles will be blazing hot. Pull them out with tongs, let them cool for a bit, and dry them completely - moisture is the enemy of shelf life.
2. Blend Your Base
Measure your carrier oils using a cylinder or pipette. You’ll want about 1 oz total for each bottle.
3. Add Essential Oils
Stick to 5–10 drops per ounce of carrier oil (that’s around a 1–2% dilution). Too much and you risk skin irritation - or walking around smelling like a cologne factory explosion. Remember, you can always add more but you cannot take it away. Start lower then work your way up.
4. Shake It Up
Cap your bottle and shake it like you mean it. We suggest letting it sit for at least 24 hours so the scent settles.
5. Label It
Even if it’s just a date and scent notes, do yourself a favor and keep track. It’ll help you dial in what works - and what doesn’t.
Bearded Coast Tip: Keep notes! The more you take your time to detail everything you do the better. Trust me.
