Bearded Dad Confessions: Episode 2
Bearded Dad Life: Lessons & Tips
Sitting down a few mornings ago with my always trusty cup of caffeine, I realized two things:
-
I haven’t written a blog post in a while.
-
My beard has been seriously neglected.
This time, though, I couldn’t blame a newborn or toddler. My boys are now 4 and 6 - full of energy, always on the move, and constantly challenging me in new ways. Life as a bearded dad hasn’t slowed down; it’s just changed. Instead of midnight diaper changes, it’s early morning wake-ups and endless “Why?” questions. And somehow, between school drop-offs, snack duty, and wrestling matches on the living room floor, my beard care routine took another hit. This inspired me to revisit this blog topic.
Adjusting to Life as a Bearded Dad of Growing Boys
When my kids were babies, I thought things would get easier once they got older. I was wrong, things are just different. The chaos doesn’t stop; it just evolves. Now, it’s sports practice, Lego explosions, and being a jungle gym after work. And let’s not forget the occasional beard tug from my youngest, who still finds it hilarious to yank on my face.
With all of this, I’ve had to rethink how to keep up with beard care while balancing dad life. Here’s what I’ve learned:
1. Make Grooming a Shared Activity
My kids love imitating me. If I’m applying beard oil, they want to “help.” So, I let them. I give them a tiny amount of Salty Vibes Beard Oil to rub on their hands while I work it into my beard. It turns a routine task into bonding time - and they feel like little grown-ups. My boys rub a little oil into their faces and smile at me. It's a very precious moment.
2. Simplify the Routine
I no longer have the luxury of a 15-minute beard routine, and haven't really since they where born. So, I stick to the essentials:
-
Morning: Quick wash with Coconut Stout Beard & Body Wash Bar, followed by Salty Vibes Beard Oil for hydration. My kids favorite because of the strawberries.
-
Night: A light application of Rip Tide Beard Butter before bed for deep conditioning. Keeping it simple ensures I stay consistent.
3. Hydration is Still Key
Chasing kids around the park all day is exhausting. I used to rely on coffee and really still do, but I’ve learned that dehydration affects everything - including beard health. Now, I keep a water bottle nearby and make sure to drink enough throughout the day. It helps with energy and keeps my beard from looking like a dry tumbleweed.
4. Prioritize a Good Trim
I used to let my beard grow wild, but with two active boys, it became a liability. Food, dirt, and the occasional sticky hand found their way into my beard daily. Now, I keep it well-trimmed with regular barber visits. Apps like Booksy make it easy to schedule an appointment before I let it get out of control. This is my "me" time. It is super relaxing to get cleaned up at the barbershop. I highly recommend this.
5. Embrace the Mess, But Not in Your Beard
Life with kids is messy - there’s no avoiding it. But that doesn’t mean my beard has to suffer. Keeping True O.G. Beard Wash in the shower ensures I can do a quick refresh whenever needed. Bonus: It makes me feel slightly less like a human napkin.
6. Make Time for Yourself
Dads are always “on.” Whether it’s work, parenting, or fixing that broken toy for the tenth time (I always have super glue in the house), we rarely get a break. But self-care isn’t selfish - it’s necessary. Taking 10 minutes at night to properly apply beard butter or even just sit in silence helps recharge my patience (and my beard game).
Final Thoughts
Being a dad with a beard isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it. These small changes have helped me maintain both my sanity and my beard, even with two wild little boys running around. If you’re a fellow bearded dad in the trenches, I see you. Stay strong, stay hydrated, and keep that beard looking its best.
